Foot care and footwear topics of diabetes support group meeting
Certified Prosthetist/Orthotist Mark Delmar, of the Hanger Clinic in Augusta, will join the LincolnHealth Diabetes Support Group for their July 22 meeting to discuss foot care for people with diabetes.
Delmar will discuss foot care and different shoe types and inserts (custom vs non-custom), and how to determine if you are eligible for diabetic footwear. The Hanger Clinic offers customized footwear that is designed to prevent pressure points that can cause blisters and sores.
There are approximately 29 million people living with diabetes in the United States and many will experience problems with their feet. Nerve damage related to diabetes can cause tingling, pain, or loss of feeling in feet, which can increase the chance of permanent injury. Proper care of the feet, including appropriate footwear, can help people with diabetes avoid injury.
The LincolnHealth Diabetes Support Group meets 1-2:15 p.m. every other month, usually on the fourth Wednesday of the month, to share experiences and send the message that no one should have to deal with diabetes alone. Meetings are held on the Miles Campus on the third floor of LincolnHealth Hospital in Damariscotta.
The Diabetes Education Program provides a range of services to diabetes patients and their families and has achieved American Association of Diabetes Educators recognition for the provision of quality services. Originally recognized in September of 2001, the program was recertified in February 2013.
