Teen hurt in Route 1 rollover in Wiscasset
Traffic backed up for miles on Wiscasset’s Route 1 on Sunday morning, Aug. 9, after a rollover accident injured a teen driver, authorities said. Route 1 was back open both north and southbound by 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 9, less than an hour after the accident.
The car’s lone occupant, Hannah Cooper, 17, of Bowdoinham was taken by ambulance to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick with what appeared to be minor injuries, police and fire officials said.
Cooper was driving a 1997 Honda Accord southbound on Route 1 when it left the roadway, struck a tree and came to rest on its roof, Wiscasset Police Officer Benjamin Kolko said. With help from a motorist who stopped, Cooper was able to get out through a back window; she is not facing any charges in the accident, Kolko said.
Attempts to gather information from hospital staff were unsuccessful. Kolko did not have further information on Cooper’s condition.
No other vehicles were involved in the accident, reported at 9:35 a.m., Wiscasset Fire Chief T.J. Merry said. Firefighters cleaned up oil and gas on the roadway, he said.
Traffic became stop-and-go shortly after the accident as emergency responders were able to open one lane.
Wiscasset Fire Department, Wiscasset Police Department and Wiscasset Ambulance Service responded to Sunday morning’s accident just south of Miss Wiscasset Diner, Merry said.
