Updated: One death in four-vehicle crash in Woolwich
UPDATE: Paul Simpson, 84, has died as a result of injuries that occurred in the four-vehicle crash on Aug. 13.
According to Sagadahoc Country Sheriff Joel Merry, “the accident remains under investigation and it could be several days before deputies can piece together the actions that caused the accident.”
According to a press release from Sagadahoc County Sheriffs Office, the accident is being investigated by Deputy Brian Carlton, and will be handed over to the District Attorney’s office for review when concluded.
Three people, including Simpson, were injured in a four-vehicle crash at the intersection of Route 1 and Shaw Road in Woolwich on Aug. 13 around 4:30 p.m., causing major traffic delays for over an hour.
According to a press release from the Sagadahoc County Sheriff's Office, Albert Pinkham, 39, of Wiscasset was driving a 2010 Toyota car and was stopped in northbound traffic to make a left-hand turn onto Shaw Road when he was rear-ended by a 2011 Chevy pickup truck operated by Thomas Palmer, 45, of Montpelier, Vermont.
The resulting collision caused Pinkham's vehicle to enter the southbound lane and hit a 2015 Honda van traveling south on Route 1, operated by Gloria Simpson, 70, of Bradenton, Florida. Simpson's van continued southbound and struck a fourth vehicle, a 2009 Honda SUV, operated by Martin Hayden, 66, of Brunswick. All vehicles were totaled in the crash.
Officers were forced to temporarily close Route 1 to clear the scene. The closure caused traffic to back up to Wiscasset to the north and the Sagadahoc Bridge to the south. Traffic traveling northbound was eventually routed to Shaw Road so it could move around the scene.
Simpson and her husband, 84-year-old Paul Simpson, were transported to Midcoast Medical Center along with Hayden by Northeast Ambulance. Paul Simpson was later transported to Maine Medical Center with a head injury.
No alcohol was believed to be involved, and all vehicle occupants were wearing seat-belts at the time of the crash. The accident remains under investigation.
Responding to the scene were the Sagadahoc County Sheriff's Office, Maine State Police, Woolwich Fire Department, Northeast Ambulance, Wiscasset Ambulance, and Woolwich EMS.
