With two more deaths resulting from motorcycle crashes, this year’s motorcycle death count in Maine now stands at 26.  

Caribou Police said a 40-year-old man was killed Monday, Sept. 7, when he lost control of his motorcycle on Route 89 in Caribou. The Somerset County Sheriff’s Office says a 60-year-old man died Sunday from injuries he received in a motorcycle crash on Aug. 30. That wreck was on Route 2 in Mercer.

Those two deaths are in addition to the four people who  were killed in three separate motorcycle crashes in Maine over the weekend, investigated by Maine State Police. Those crashes took place in Falmouth, Lebanon and Hiram. The Caribou crash Monday means that five people died on Maine roads during Labor Day weekend — all on motorcycles.

The Maine Bureau of Highway Safety says this will be the deadliest year for motorcycle deaths since 1991 when 34 people died that year in motorcycle crashes.  

Both 2012 and 2009 ended with 24 motorcycle deaths each.
