A day at home
Through the wonder of technology, I was able to work at home on Tuesday. Getting through my second week with a cold, I didn't want to spread any more germs to my co-workers, managed to get a little rest, plus I avoided some phone calls – I think! And I avoided driving in the first storm of the season; I'm getting to hate it more and more each year. Reaction time is getting slower.
Hopping from emails, texts, and our word processing program to posting the stories and photos in our publishing system is a bit fun. One of the toughest things about my job, however, is scheduling when things go up on our websites (Register and Wiscasset Newspaper). Of course, breaking news goes immediately on the websites, as well as obituaries, but we also receive a great amount of stories about upcoming events, columns, letters to the editor and more. We try to space the stories out through the week and weekend so the sites stay as fresh as possible. And if you haven't taken advantage of our Daily Catch feature, where you receive the day's headlines via email at 9 a.m. each day, be sure not to miss our news by signing up on the website.
The weekly news business has changed. In order to keep up with the times of instant access, newspapers have to have a website. Many newspapers are charging money for total access, while others are allowing only a certain amount of access to the news before you have to pay. I am glad we are a free website. It has cut down on subscriptions to the print version some but it has increased our overall quality of supplying the news in a timely manner.
As the new year begins, who knows what other features we will be able to put on our websites? Our website administrators are continually trying to work on features that will better inform and entertain you, the reader. Stay tuned and log in every day to find out!
Happy New Year everybody.
