Fire damages Newcastle antiques business
No one was hurt in a Monday morning fire at Robert L. Foster Antiques on Route One in Newcastle, Newcastle Fire Chief Clayton Huntley said. Rags with linseed oil on them from refinishing work caused the fire, Huntley said.
“Evidently one of the rags wasn’t disposed of correctly and it spontaneously combusted,” Huntley said.
Wiscasset and Damariscotta firefighters helped Newcastle at the scene; Nobleboro minded Newcastle’s station and other towns covered one another’s stations, Huntley said.
Someone at the business called in the report of the fire. Huntley said. When he arrived, smoke was showing but no flames. Fire damage was confined to one room, believed to be a workshop, and its contents, Huntley said.
