Phoebe Nichols exhibition at Miles
Miles Memorial Hospital is pleased to present “Facials: Recent Collage Portraits” by Phoebe Nichols on view March 19 through May 6. Visitors to the hall gallery exhibit will see some unusual faces looking back at them.
Nichols, a Damariscotta-based artist, is fascinated by the expressiveness of the human face; how even the slightest tweak of its features can convey very different emotions.
Her cut paper collages present a cast of characters, both strange and familiar, onto which the viewer can project personal meaning. The artist has not named the pieces. They are numbered in the order in which they came into being.
It is hard to resist comparing them to people that we know, and to invent stories about them.
A long-time resident of Lincoln County, Nichols received a bachelor of fine arts degree from Cornell University, where she studied printmaking. She worked as a graphic designer for many years in New York, Boston, and Maine. This is her second solo exhibit.
A portion of the proceeds from art sales will benefit Miles Memorial Hospital.
