Sharing bodies
We agree with this week's decision by the Boothbay-Boothbay Harbor Community School District School Committee to allow Wiscasset high school students to participate on the Boothbay Region High School football team. With the declining enrollment in both schools hurting sports participation, decisions like this one will save at least one sport at BRHS and allow the five or six Wiscasset students to play the sport which is not offered at the school.
The baseball and softball rosters at BRHS have been short the past few years, and the girls basketball program at Wiscasset Middle High School has barely held on, with the school fielding only a varsity team the past couple of years. Baseball was non-existent at Boothbay Region Elementary School last year and it looks like BRES will not field a baseball team or a softball team this spring, so the high school could be looking at dropping those sports in the near future. Or, perhaps, allow those players interested to join the rosters at WMHS.
The swim and wrestling programs at both schools in the past have shared participants because both are individual sports.
Are we headed toward combining schools for extra-curricular activities with other sports? It is an interesting concept and perhaps one to explore as the student enrollments dwindle at both schools.
