Car falls from Leeman Highway Viaduct
Woolwich Fire Department responded along with Bath Fire and Police, West Bath Fire, and the Sagadahoc and Lincoln County sheriff’s offices, to a horrific accident at about 3 p.m. Monday, on the Leeman Highway viaduct section of Route One through Bath.
Witnesses reported a gray Mercury SUV spinning on the viaduct, according to Bath Police Chief Mike Field. The car broke through the guard rail on the southbound side and plunged 30 feet to the road below, between Washington and Middle streets, hitting a pickup truck traveling southbound on the ground level. Airbags deployed in the car, which landed on its roof. The bed of the pickup truck was flattened.
Two people in the car, a mother and her son, were injured and taken by ambulance to Maine Medical Center. The woman, Melissa Medina, 37, of Windham, and her 12-year-old son, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the truck, Roy Ordway, 60, of Bath was shaken up, but not injured, and did not go to the hospital.
The viaduct was closed while police investigated. Conditions were icy, but Field said it was too early in the investigation to identify a cause. Police have ruled out drugs or alcohol as contributing to the accident. In a press release, Bath Police asked any witnesses who may have seen the car before it fell from the viaduct to call Detective Sargent Andrew Booth at 443-8367.
Route One was closed in both directions, both above ground and at ground level for operations and investigation. It reopened around 4:50 p.m. Traffic was diverted southbound from the bridge onto Front Street and Center Street, and traffic was able to rejoin Route One at High Street. Northbound traffic was diverted at High Street and routed onto Washington Street, where drivers could get on the bridge at Vine. Both directions were kept off the structure until the lanes were clear and emergency repairs had been made where the car went through the guard rail.
The Leeman Highway viaduct through Bath is scheduled to be replaced, with some of the work beginning next month, and full closure of the structure slated for October, after the busy tourist season. The superstructure is more than 60 years old, and more than 18,000 cars and trucks travel on it every day, according to Maine Department of Transportation.
