Overnight fire damages Whitefield home
No one was hurt in an overnight house fire at 307 Hollwood Boulevard in Whitefield, Whitefield Fire Chief Scott Higgins said early Thursday morning.
Owner Tina Golden and all other occupants of the two-story gambrel home all got out safely on their own; the home had fire damage upstairs and smoke and water damage elsewhere, Higgins said.
The fire, reported shortly before 3 a.m. Thursday, was accidental, Higgins said. It started in the area of a wood stove pipe, he said. The scene was cleared prior to 6 a.m.
Alna fire crews were first on-scene and then a Whitefield firefighter was able to knock down the fire pretty quickly, Higgins said.
Alna Fire Chief Mike Trask said he saw smoke coming out of the home’s eave when he arrived. More than a dozen Alna firefighters responded to the fire.
Between 40 and 50 firefighters from Wiscasset, Alna, Jefferson, Somerville and Whitefield helped in the effort, Higgins said.
Five Wiscasset firefighters manned a pond that served as a water supply, near the Alna post office on Route 194, for other towns to refill their trucks. Assistant Wiscasset Fire Chief Nick Merry said Whitefield had used the water supply; while the Wiscasset Newspaper was there, a Somerville truck came for water.
It had snowed in the area earlier. Fortunately, the temperature rose and conditions were not a problem in the effort, Higgins said.
