Atwell takes plea in theft case
Through an attorney, Nancie Atwell, founder of the Center for Teaching and Learning in Edgecomb, has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor theft charge in connection with an incident at Reny’s.
Atwell was not present in Lincoln County Superior Court Monday morning when her lawyer William Avantaggio entered the guilty plea by authorization. Atwell received a two-year, deferred disposition from which the good outcome would be the charge’s dismissal.
Atwell was ordered to stay out of all Reny’s stores, undergo a psychiatric evaluation and do 150 hours of community service. She will complete the community service at the Center for Teaching and Learning, Avantaggio said.
Damariscotta police issued Atwell a summons on the theft charge earlier this spring. Police said Atwell put a blouse worth less than $20 in a shopping bag.
In 2015, Atwell became the first winner of the Global Teacher Prize.
