Maine State Police said June 29 that they charged two teenage boys with car theft, outlining an eight-car burglary spree that began June 21 with a 1979 Porsche 911 taken from the Foggy Bottom Campground, on the Kennebec River in Farmingdale.

The two boys, both 15 years old and from Farmingdale and Whitefield, were arrested June 28 during the night, when one of them was caught attempting to steal another car, according to the state police, in a June 29 news release.

Seven of the cars were taken from  Farmingdale used car dealer Maine Ave. Motors, which troopers had been watching since late last week. 

The eighth vehicle, the Porsche, was taken from a resident of Foggy Bottom Campground. 

The teens face felony charges of theft, burglary, aggravated criminal mischief, and misdemeanor unauthorized taking of a motor vehicle, police said. Because they are minors, their names have not been released.

The cars were later found in different spots; a 2000 Chevy Tahoe was discovered inside a fairgrounds building in Litchfield. That SUV had apparently been used to ram the fairground gate and ride through the fields there.

Another car had been found in the parking lot of Uncle Henry’s on Route 17 in Augusta. One more had been returned to the car lot in Farmingdale, albeit covered with mud and grass, inside and out, state police said.

Sgt. Christopher Rogers said the thefts began June 21 when the Porsche was stolen from the campground and later found with its motor running on Bowman Street in Farmingdale. Residents there called police about a car driving erratically in their neighborhood.

On June 24, troopers responded to a call on the Pond Road in West Gardiner where two more stolen cars had been driven off-road, damaging fields there. One of the cars was left behind. There are also fields in Lincoln County where the cars may have damaged fields, as well, police said.

Troopers said the boys entered the office of the car lot, found car keys and then drove the vehicles away. 

Total damage is estimated at $50,000. Cars taken included two Subaru Outbacks, a 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix and a 2003 Mazda Protégé.  In addition to the stolen cars and damage to the fairgrounds, the boys also took a license plate from a parked car in Farmingdale.  The license plate number was “STOL3N” and was recovered June 28 on one of the stolen cars.
