Pair of accidents on Wiscasset’s Route One
Several people received minor injuries in a pair of accidents on Wiscasset’s Route One Wednesday night, authorities said.
One near Norm’s was a four-vehicle accident, from which at least four people were transported by ambulance to area hospitals, Wiscasset Police Officer Nadean Crossley said.
According to the police report, all four vehicles were traveling northbound on Route One. One of the cars stopped because traffic was slowing down. William McClellan of Rockport hit the rear of the car driven by Faith Gardiner of Woolwich. Sean Fogarty of Rockland hit the rear of McClellan’s vehicle, and Harriet Larson of Wiscasset hit the rear of Fogarty’s car. The collision between Larson and Fogarty sent both drivers to the hospital and both vehicles were towed. McClellan and Gardiner were both able to drive their vehicles away, but the passenger in Gardiner’s vehicle, Terrance Kungle, was transported to the hospital to get checked out for pain.
The other accident, near Naked Leather and Coastal Stove Shop, involved two vehicles traveling southbound. Richard Dustin of Bowdoin was headed southbound on Route One and had stopped to turn left into the Coastal Stove Shop parking lot. Linda Fitzgerald of Rockland ran into the back of Dustin’s car because she did not have enough time to stop, and was following too closely. Fitzgerald was transported to the hospital.
Wiscasset Police, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Wiscasset Ambulance Service and the Wiscasset Fire Department responded.
Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputy James Read was at Route One and Beech Nut Hill Road shortly before 7 p.m., diverting southbound Route One traffic onto Beech Nut Hill where motorists could then pick up Old Bath Road, taking them back onto Route One. Northbound traffic was temporarily diverted around the accident scene via Norm’s parking lot and Route 144, but traffic was slowed considerably in the area.
Adding to the traffic slowdown was evening roadwork in Woolwich that had traffic down to one lane just south of the Wiscasset line.
