Celebrate National Ice Cream Month ... before it ends!
I didn't celebrate National Ice Cream Day on July 16. Did you? But there's still a few days left to celebrate National Ice Cream Month, July, designated as such by President Ronald Reagan in 1984.
Everyone has their favorite ice cream flavors. According to the International Dairy Foods Association, America's top five favorite individual flavors are vanilla, chocolate, cookies 'n cream, mint chocolate chip and chocolate chip cookie dough. Chocolate is in my top five and I despise any kind of mint ice cream. Vanilla comes close to cracking my top five, but after looking over a list of ice cream flavors in the IDFA website, my top five flavors are coffee, chocolate, chocolate chip, black raspberry and butter pecan, with vanilla coming in sixth — but I like that best served on hot apple crisp or in a hot fudge sundae.
What are your top five flavors?
Since I was a kid, hundreds of new flavors have been developed. Some on that list I mentioned earlier include Rockin Poppin Cotton Candy, Campfire Toasted S'mores, Emerald Necklace, Garbage Can and Yellow Brick Road. Your guess is as good as mine on what the latter three might taste like.
Now, I'm not against trying new flavors (have tried the granddaughters' cotton candy -- too sweet), but I guess when you're waiting in line at an ice cream stand, you don't want to hold people up by asking for a taste of such and such ice cream — plus the servers usually don't have the time.
Maybe this final weekend of July I will celebrate National Ice Cream Month and try some new flavor, but you can be assured that it won't contain mint.
