Cheers ... no jeers
Three cheers for the Boothbay Railway Village offering its green to the Farmers Market for the final four Thursday markets of the season, Sept. 19 and 26, and Oct. 3 and 10. Work is being done on the Common's drainage system, which is why the Farmers Market had to find a location. Market organizer Dan Sortwell said the market will return to the Common in the summer of 2020 but we have heard people express their concerns with the busy traffic on market days and have suggested the market either move to the Clifford playground area on Back River Road or perhaps Sherman Field in Boothbay Harbor (near the high school). Perhaps they might consider a deal with the Railway Village if things work out well during its final four weeks.
Cheers to American Legion Post 36 for its upcoming fundraiser, a yard sale, craft fair and barbecue, on Saturday, Sept. 14. And cheers to restaurateur Ralph Smith for agreeing to provide the barbecue, which will include ribs, pulled pork, pulled chicken, coleslaw, potato salad, bake beans and more – all for a suggested donation of just $10 for adults and $5 for kids. Here's hoping that the fundraiser to help with the post's programs is successful. Feed your appetite between 5 and 7 p.m. and help the Legion.
Cheers to organizer Lori Reynolds, her helpers and the area restaurant workers for the first week of Boothbay Harbor Fest. The town was busy over the weekend and some late summer tourist money came rolling in. Two more big Harbor Fest events are upcoming in East Boothbay this weekend and it sure looks like a lot of fun. Check out our Harbor Fest pages or the online feature for information on what's planned.
I tried to find a "jeer" but with the beautiful weather we've been having, who can complain.
My final cheer – a collective one from the community, I'm sure – is for the Rigas family finally being able to open the Boothbay Harbor House of Pizza for the first time since Oct. 31, 2018. It was a terrible year for the family with the fire in the restaurant and the death of the family matriarch, Mama Rigas. Congratulations Mark and Konstantina for your perseverance.
