Donald F. Dow
Donald F. Dow, a longtime resident of Westport Island, Maine, peacefully passed away at the age of 96 on April 14, 2025, under the exceptional care of Togas VA Hospital, surrounded by the love and memories of a life well-lived.
Born near Caribou, he proudly answered the call to service, bravely serving his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. His proud service as a Marine was a cornerstone of his character.
Upon his return, he lived in Millbury, Massachusetts where he built the foundation for his life. He dedicated many years working as an executive at AAA Northeast, providing assistance and support to countless travelers and embarking on his own travel adventures. Even after retiring to Maine, his strong work ethic kept him active and engaged with people through various jobs, including Bath Iron Works. Later in life, he found deep satisfaction as a property caretaker for several local properties, making wonderful friends, and becoming a familiar presence in the community.
Don was a man of unwavering independence, a trait that defined him throughout his life. He was known for his strong willed personality, his love of storytelling, and interacting with others. Those who knew him well understood that Don had a lot to say, and he never hesitated to share his thoughts and experiences and talk about things he was proud of.
He was a devoted husband to Myrna (Cromwell) Dow, with whom he shared 71 years of marriage. He was father to Karen Mara of Bryson City, North Carolina, and is now reunited with his late daughter, Denise Dow. He cherished his role as a grandfather to his four grandkids: Timothy Fair of Rumford, Michael Fair of Wakefield, Massachusetts, Amanda Alley of Oakland, and Shane Boyes and his wife Madeline of Bangor. His joy was further amplified by his great-grandchildren, Kaelyn, Mabel, and Aubrey.
Don's legacy is one of service, hard work, independence, and a life lived on his own terms. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
A private memorial service will be held for the family.
