Isn't it grand
Who will be grand marshal of Wiscasset’s Fourth of July parade? You might know by now, but as of Tuesday, the suspense was building.
Whoever gets the honor, we will know, as always, they were among so many in town worthy of it through their service or achievements or just what they have added to the town by being part of it.
Picking one a year must be like picking the prettiest daisy in a field: So hard to decide, but you can’t go wrong.
May this year’s grand marshal get a beautiful morning and the Wiscasset parade’s usual strong turnout of residents, one-time residents and visitors waving flags or just waving, and bedecked in red, white and blue or insignia from their military service, or in a hat bearing the name of a Navy ship they served on, or helped build at Bath Iron Works. These all remind us how our independence came to be, and continues to be.
The sight of the parade and the parade-goers lining the streets doesn't get old. It is renewing, reverent and fun.
Happy Independence Day, in advance. Take in as much as you can, from the parade to the fundraising food and the fireworks. And to the grand marshal, whoever you are, congratulations, and thank you for being one of the reasons it is a grand day to be in Wiscasset.
