Liberman sworn in as District Attorney
Jonathan Liberman was sworn in as District VI District Attorney on May 19 at West Bath District Court. Sagadahoc County Court Clerk Anita Alexander performed the honors.
Liberman replaced Geoffrey Rushlau, who was nominated by Gov. Paul LePage to a District Court judgeship in March. In April, Rushlau’s party, the Republican Party, sent Liberman’s name, along with that of Paul Cavenaugh, to LePage as possible replacements. Until Rushlau’s elevation, Liberman served as Deputy District Attorney for District VI; Cavenaugh served in the same capacity in District IV. Liberman was selected in early May.
Looking on at Friday’s swear-in were Liberman’s wife, Erin, their toddler son, Benjamin, other family members, friends and nearly all of the District VI staff. When he saw the staff in the courtroom, Liberman joked, “Who’s working today?”
Liberman said he envisioned the DA job as a team effort. “I know I’m dependent on family, friends, law enforcement, the ADAs, and all the other staff. At least it’s a team effort when we’re successful.” That drew laughs from the courtroom.
“Filling Geoff Rushau’s shoes is going to be hard work, and it’s a huge task,” he said. “But I knew from an early age this is what I wanted to do, it’s the greatest job on Earth, and I’m really looking forward to this opportunity.”
