Holed up in my small office at home on Wednesday, Jan. 6, away from my TV, I was preparing for next week’s issue, editing and formatting press releases, staying in touch with my reporters and assistant editor, and hoping my column for the week about local kindness was enjoyed by readers.

Then … I get a text from my assistant editor Susan Johns at 2:38 p.m.… “Protesters are breaching security at Capitol building.” A quick follow-up text, “They are on the terrace and scaling the building … Are you watching? … Oh no, they are inside the building.” I answered, “No. But I will.”

I have hardly thought of much else since then, as I continue to watch and read about the insurrection, riot, rampage against democracy. I have to get away from it – glad for the six NFL games this past weekend – as my blood pressure surely rises each time I return to the story.

I am still mad six days later and I am hoping our country’s leaders will do the right thing to make sure nothing like this ever happens again. Our country’s law enforcement agencies are also helping to round up these marauders. If President Trump is impeached for inciting this heinous act, so be it. I can live with that – if our leaders feel that impeachment is the best method for punishing him. Five people died, Congressional leaders were threatened, and a lot of damage was done inside the Capitol.

Meanwhile, we will continue to write about local acts of kindness and I hope we can enjoy watching the inauguration of our next president and vice president, Joseph Biden and Kamala Harris, in peace.
