Neighbor, fellow firefighter help Wiscasset man recover dog from brook
Heidi Thiboutot said Tuesday, her and husband Mike Thiboutot’s chocolate lab Maddie will forever be loved and remembered. The 7-year-old dog was recovered from Montsweag Brook where another of their dogs was rescued Sunday night.
Black lab Tyson, aka Tubby, was recovering very well, Heidi Thiboutot reported in texts Tuesday morning.
Maddie was found after family members and others continued searching Monday. Mike Thiboutot, fellow Woolwich Fire Department member Domenic Maccio and the Thiboutots’ neighbor Kevin Hardwick worked together with a sled and rope to return her to shore.
Sunday’s search drew Wiscasset fire and police personnel and Woolwich firefighter Lonny Rowe, Heidi Thiboutot’s cousin. Wiscasset Ambulance Service checked out Mike Thiboutot after he’d been in the water saving Tyson. He’d heard Tyson breathing in the water, he said Monday. The couple realized the two dogs were missing after their third dog came into their home at 56 Montsweag Valley Road wet.
Wiscasset Fire Chief T.J. Merry said searchers looked from about 10:30 p.m. to midnight Sunday night and used thermal imaging equipment to try to locate Maddie; the steep, snow-covered banking was a challenge.
On Tuesday, Heidi Thiboutot thanked everyone who helped, in any way. “Just so grateful for everyone in the community willing to help (and) their thoughts and prayers. We have prayed for everyone helping and feel so blessed. It is so greatly appreciated.
“Your pets are more than animals. They’re your four-legged, furry kids and siblings to your children. Maddie-moo or Moosie as we often called her will always be loved and forever remembered.”
