New free diabetes prevention program groups starting soon
Boothbay Region (BR) and Central Lincoln County (CLC) YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program, which helps adults lose weight through healthier eating and increased physical activity to reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes, are starting new groups. Through partnership with MaineHealth and LincolnHealth, both YMCAs are now able to offer this program at no cost to all community members. The CLC YMCA group will start on Thursday, Jan. 23 at 4 p.m. while the BR YMCA group will begin Wednesday, Feb. 5 at 10 a.m.
The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program is a yearlong group-based lifestyle intervention for adults at high-risk of developing type 2 diabetes, and has been shown to reduce the number of new cases of diabetes by 58% overall and by 71% in adults over 60. Long-term program goals include reducing participants’ body weight by 7% and increasing physical activity to 150 minutes per week.
