A season to remember
There are many things I will (try) to remember about the most successful Lady Seahawk basketball season ever – the 2019 undefeated and state championship team.
Now, I am not an insider but I did see and cover most of their games this season, including the last four, which they had to win in order to get the program's second Gold Ball – the first since 1984.
I, along with other Lady Seahawk fans, will remember the many blowout games during the regular season. It was fun to see the team win but we were all wondering if they were ever going to be tested before tournament time. That test came in the 12th game, when the undefeated Oak Hill Raiders came to Porter Memorial. Boothbay held off a second half run by the Raiders and recorded another victory. That gave Seahawk Nation a bit of confidence that the team was able to handle pressure situations.
Another memory I will take with me is the play and leadership of senior co-captain Faith Blethen. She got her 1,000 career points, was named the conference MVP for the second straight season, is a McDonald's all-star and is one of three finalists for 2019 Miss Maine Basketball. Lots of accolades but I will remember the dozens of blocked shots, her defense, the myriad offensive and defensive rebounds and her assists – there were many times she could have shot the ball but gave it up to a teammate. Perhaps only a former coach can remember those things, but they are just as important as putting the ball in the basket in order for a team to succeed.
As I said at the outset, there are many memories from this season but I would be remiss if I didn't mention the play of Faith's teammates. One player does not make a team and the other starters and subs came through when needed, i.e., the championship game. It takes togetherness, a goal, commitment (as their warm-up jerseys indicated), and heart to win a championship. The 2019 Lady Seahawks had all of that – plus dedicated coaches and parents.
Congratulations and may you (the team) remember into your old age what it took to make this season so special.
