Wiscasset firefighters called out Christmas Eve, Christmas
Wiscasset firefighters responded to one fire late Christmas Eve and another very early on Christmas, according to authorities.
The Saturday night one was a possible garage fire but turned out to be a chimney fire, Deputy Fire Chief John Merry said.
The chimney fire occurred at a home at 590 Birch Point Road, Merry said in a phone interview from the fire station Christmas Eve. No one was hurt, he said. Five firefighters remained on scene at about 10:30 p.m. cleaning the chimney, about half-hour after the page; and Merry was one of five at the station, for a total of 10, so it was a good response, he said.
Alna, Dresden, Westport Island, Boothbay and Newcastle were paged for mutual aid due to the initial report as a possible structure fire but were canceled after it was found to be a chimney fire, Merry said.
In a second fire call that involved some other area departments, Wiscasset was part of the mutual aid on a structure fire on Main Street in Richmond. According to dispatchers for Lincoln and Sagadahac counties, Wiscasset, Woolwich, Dresden, Damariscotta, Pittston, Richmond, Gardiner, Bowdoin and Bowdoinham were paged to the fire reported at 12:37 a.m. Sunday.
One occupant was taken to Maine General Medical Center in Augusta and the State Fire Marshal’s Office was called to the scene, a Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office dispatcher said. Messages left Sunday morning for the state investigator and Richmond’s fire chief were not immediately returned.
