Last week’s school closing and other good Wiscasset calls
Happy Halloween, and let’s open a bag that’s all treats – kudos on several good calls Wiscasset has made of late, including its decisions after last week’s incident at Wiscasset Middle High.
Let’s start light, though. Good move taking Scarecrowfest north to the common. The aesthetics of the historic buildings nearby and all those trees befit a Hallmark Channel movie. The common looks so autumnal in autumn, and the space for multiple activities flows better on the big hill. Plus, First Congregational Church and Wiscasset Public Library are right there and were taking part. The event was great when it was at the town office because it was a great event. Now the event has a venue that enhances it instead of limiting it.
Good call, Wiscasset, closing school due to a possible threat. There’s no sorry in safety.
Ditto on nixing last Friday night’s annual Haunted High School at Wiscasset Middle High School after last Thursday’s incident. And a big kudos for calling the event back on, for this Friday night, Nov. 1. Now all the students’ hard work and excitement for the costumes and more will have the payoff: Getting to share it all with attendees and helping the student council raise funds. So the calendar will have turned, it’s still Halloween if you’re celebrating it.
More importantly, getting back to normal like that, once it’s safe to, sends kids and the rest of us the right message to keep on keeping on.
Good call making such a widely liked local and Wiscasset Community Center veteran the interim director of Parks and Recreation. If you’re looking for a synonym for popular in Wiscasset, you might try looking under G, for Goud, Duane Goud. Just check the response to our Facebook post of Phil Di Vece’s interview. The town will sort out who gets the permanent job to do best by taxpayers and patrons, but the temp choice is drawing praise.
The most important of all these recent calls was canceling school until there was a handle on the writing in the bathrooms. And due to the matter’s seriousness, we think school and police officials were wise in another call they made: Keeping the school community and the rest of the public as informed as possible, Thursday and since then. Information leaves less room for fear, confusion and rumors.
Week’s positive parting thought: Thank you and be proud, student-athletes, parents, coaches and others for another Wolverines and Seahawks-Wolverines season of perseverance and sportsmanship.
