Roll up sleeves over Woolwich bridge
Snow wasn’t all that fell on the Midcoast in the past week. But just as with the snow, freezing rain and whatever else was coming down, the $25 million that fell from the federal sky for the Station 46 Bridge project in Woolwich should be approached with care.
That it helps ensure a project is a good thing, as that stretch of Route 1 is so key to commuters, travelers and businesses, anything invested in it for upkeep or improvement is a plus. And Maine did well to win it, since the round of requests sounded pretty competitive.
That Woolwich is going in with its eyes wide open is the best part of the news. To get the best project for the site for all concerned, and to minimize impact on secondary roads during the project, the state and town will need to work together. It helped get Wiscasset a project not uniformly supported but as a whole reflecting committee and other work the town and state put into it.
So, roll up your sleeves, Woolwich and Maine Department of Transportation, and come to the table. And congratulations on the big get.
Week’s positive parting thought: Thank you to the Wiscasset Early Bird businesses and shoppers, including the out-of-towners, who left home pre-dawn on a cold Nov. 9 to keep the tradition going.
