Friendly is good
One of the friendly faces around Wiscasset Municipal Airport gave me a call the other day. I have interviewed pilot Lisa Reece and her husband and fellow pilot Steve Williams, or both, many times, usually about good things happening at the town-owned airport. Williams has been on its advisory committee several years.
As most days are busy days, I was thinking about copy and more ideas for copy, so when Reece called, I thought she had some news to share or maybe a nice feature idea. I’m not saying all our nice stories about the airport come from this couple, but a lot of them have. So, I asked her what was up and, it turned out, nothing.
No, Reece said in this time of social distancing and all else coronavirus, she has been making a point to call people, just to say hi and to catch up. Of course, this so impressed me I asked her if I might do a little story on it. It fits in with the bell-ringing, sign-making and ribbon-tying, etc. we’ve reported in connection with COVID-19. She didn’t mind the idea, but then I said maybe I would just mention it in an editorial instead. I am not above wringing a story out of small happenings, for in some ways they matter as much as other news.
But I also know Reece just called to be friendly, not to be interviewed. So, there. I can be a person, too.
Do you have a friend, associate, or loved one you haven’t called for a while?
Find the time.
