Local singer/songwriter releases new album
Boothbay Harbor resident Wayne Glaser just released his new album “Songs You May Never Hear.” The title makes you wonder …
“I wanted an album name with some humor, but at the same time one that makes you think. If you don't listen, well, you won’t hear it. And what might you be missing?” he says with a quip. Yes, the cover says it all.
This project is made up of songs he wrote and recorded during the pandemic and, like all his other projects, Glaser does it all. He composes all the music, sings the lyrics he’s written, and plays the instruments, some with the help of his keyboard and music software. Drums and orchestral pieces rely on technology, but he is still creating the entire piece. This talented guy has played bass, acoustic and electric guitar for many years, belonging to several bands in his earlier years. He’s a strong vocalist and often sang lead in his band days.
Glaser has been working solo for about 15 years, and records all his own work. He tells us that putting together all the instrument and vocal tracks, so that it sounds like a something.
“It takes a lot of work - days, weeks or even months, to get music to the point where I feel it can belong in the world. Sometimes I’ll put a song aside if it’s not coming together. At times I’ve gone back to work I started months, or even years ago, and it clicks. You never know,” he says.
Glaser continues, “One of the songs on this album was inspired by an exhibit at the Boothbay Region Art Foundation. “I saw a painting of buttons and it triggered a memory from my childhood of a wooden box of buttons in our house. The song came into being in 15 minutes.
Another song, “A Book That I Read,” came from a story about a young boy being interviewed. He talks about visualizing the story taking place as he reads it.”
Though not a specific music genre, Glaser calls most of the material on this album “mellow pop,” with lyrics that are easy to understand and not overly loud. He finds his music has a broad appeal, with his audience ranging from GenXers to Baby Boomers.
In 2020 he released a localized album, “Songs from the Coast of Maine,” with several songs that reference locations from the Midcoast and Boothbay regions. Last year he released a Tropical Rock album titled “That’s Where I’m Gonna Be,” a fun project with steel drums, marimbas, and real feel for being in the tropics. It was a fun and unique challenge, and he’s pleased with the results, especially when he sees fans singing along.
