A special event: ‘At the River’ from Lincoln Theater and Skidompha
Lincoln Theater and Skidompha Library’s Chats With Champions are pleased to present a special event in recognition of Juneteenth – a free screening of the documentary film, “At The River,” playing for one screening only Monday, June 19 at 2 p.m.
“At The River” provides a snapshot of the history of racism in the American South. The film shares filmmaker Carolyn Crowder’s story, growing up during the 1960s in Montgomery, Alabama, and that of the Presbyterian ministers who stood up for what they knew was right during a time when so many horrific wrongs were being committed due to racist beliefs. Her experience during those trying times inspired her to begin the “At the River” project. Crowder will be in attendance for a post-screening talkback.
In the Civil Rights era of the 1950s and 1960s most Presbyterian ministers in the deep south stood on the banks of the cultural river of segregation and white supremacy. They opted not to stir the waters in their congregations and communities by speaking out. However, a few young southern Presbyterian ministers did brave those currents through their sermons, community organizing and participating in marches and protests. Filmmaker/director Crowder traveled throughout the Southeast interviewing these ministers, now in their 80s and 90s, about their experiences and what it took to go against the racist currents during those hard days within their local communities and congregations while facing dangerous and hate-filled consequences for their actions. “At The River” chronicles their lives and their decisions, as well as Crowder’s first-hand experience as a young white southern girl from Montgomery, Alabama. where she was active in the First Presbyterian Church. During those turbulent times the ministers, through their love and example, had a huge impact on her life in helping her overcome her southern racist brainwashing.
Carolyn Crowder, Ph.D. is a retired psychologist who specialized in parent education and published three parenting books, one of which was a New York Times national bestseller.
