‘Read the Book’: Movie special event for ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’
Rolling Stone magazine calls Martin Scorcese’s new film “Killers of the Flower Moon” simply a “masterpiece.” During its two-week run at Harbor Theater, there will be two showings daily. What that means is that for those of us who prefer matinees, we will not have to battle crowds on its two Sunday screenings but will be able to go to any of the 2 p.m. matinees Wednesday through Sunday. (This is also a very good thing for some of us early bed-timers because its runtime is 3 hours and 26 minutes.)
We anticipate that many of our patrons will have either already read the book (of the same name) by David Grann or will read it prior to their viewing of the movie. And that leads us to consider it an ideal film to include in our much-enjoyed “Read the Book: See the Movie” (RBSM) series that we hold in partnership with the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library and which we began last year with the highly successful “Where the Crawdads Sing.”
This film’s length, however, means that our regular plan of identifying one specific showing as the RBSM screening followed by the book discussion is simply not practical. So, for “Killers,” we have set the book discussion for Oct. 28 at 10:30 a.m. in the Great Room of the Library. Folks who would like to see the movie before participating in the discussion, will be able to choose whatever showing they would like between opening day, Oct. 20 and Friday, Oct. 27. And with two showings a day Wednesday through Sunday, this will give everyone 12 chances to see it before the discussion at the Library.
Don’t have the book yet and really don’t want to buy it? No problem, BHML has ordered extra copies of the book which should be available at the circulation desk starting Sept. 27. Stop by the library, 4 Oak St., to check out the book, pick a day and time to watch the movie at Harbor Theater, and join us on Saturday, Oct. 28 to talk about the one 2024 movie release that truly deserves to be talked about.
