Friends of Wiscasset Public Library support our library by organizing and financing special projects for the benefit of the Library, and by promoting WPL’s services in the community. We are currently planning the 11th annual Bands for Books which will be held on Labor Day, Sept. 1 at Lakehurst Lodge.

"The Penguin Lessons" - (PG13; 1 hour, 50 minutes) - Steve Coogan stars as Tom Michell, a disillusioned British teacher who takes a post at an elite boarding school in 1976 Buenos Aires, hoping for a quiet escape. Instead, he finds himself in a nation teetering on the brink of political upheaval—and in a classroom full of unruly, disinterested students. During a brief vacation to Uruguay, Tom impulsively rescues a penguin in a misguided attempt to impress a woman. When his romantic plan fizzles, he tries to release the penguin—but fate has other ideas.

On Thursday, April 24, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., The Peace Gallery in Damariscotta will host a free screening and community discussion of "Elisif’s Story," a powerful 36-minute video that traces one young woman’s journey through substance use disorder and death, and her family’s experience of love and unimaginable loss.

The Center for Teaching and Learning is putting on productions of “Twelfth Night” and “The Tempest” on Wednesday, April 16. Students in CTL’s middle school, grades 5-8, have been hard at work learning their lines and rehearsing. Additionally, students have showcased their strengths and taken on responsibilities for tech and sound set up, costumes, props, and set design.

Okay, adults, this one’s for you! On Saturday, May 10, Hearty Roots is offering an immersive experience to nourish your mind and body. The half-day “InterlUde” retreat is open to all female-identifying folks and begins at 1 p.m. at the Hearty Roots campus in Bremen. Upon arrival, you’ll be celebrated and welcomed with open arms. At 1:30, participants will set out on a Woods Wander, an approximate 2-mile leisurely hike meandering through old-growth hemlocks.

Easter Sunday isn't just for bunnies this year as the Discovery Channel's “Naked and Afraid” premiers Sunday, April 20 at 8 p.m. featuring Maine's own Michael Douglas.

River Arts in Damariscotta welcomes the public to the opening reception of "New Works" on Saturday, April 12 from 2 to 4 p.m. This uplifting exhibition, which opened April 8, will engage visitors in an exciting showcase of vibrant, contemporary art.

"New Works" highlights fresh, spirited pieces by Maine artists, radiating warmth and color in a diverse range of mediums, styles, and perspectives. New Works runs April 8 through May 24.

Legendary filmmaker, writer, actor, and artist John Waters returns to The Waldo with an all-new show, "The Naked Truth." Night one, Saturday, June 21 is sold out; a second show will be Friday, June 20 at 8 p.m.

OK, John Waters is finally coming clean, so to speak, and his all-new, secret-sharing, one-man crackpot comedy show dares to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the filthy truth. Over-sharing? You bet. Too much information? Maybe so, but airing his dirty laundry makes Waters feel clean. He’ll talk to you straight even when he’s definitely not.

Heartwood Theater Summer Camp enrollment is open for students entering grades 5-12.  Directors Teralyn Reiter and Griff Braley will lead students through an exciting three-week experience in storytelling, mask, stage combat and movement, and musical elements, culminating in an original production of the epic of Beowulf.  There's a challenge of just the right size for every student, regardless of experience or age.

They may be framed, but the stories within the photographs at Boothbay Region Art Foundation will not be confined. Yes, it’s the Maine Photographers Showcase, a re-imagining of the Maine Photography Show held at this time for 17 years. Bruce Burnham, chairman for 14 of its years, created the Showcase to keep this art form in the public eye.

Sheepscot Chorus invites you to their annual spring concerts on April 12 and 13, both at 3 p.m. On the program will be Bob Chilcott's "A Little Jazz Mass," and "Folk Songs Through the Ages: Folk songs from the 1200s to the present." Professional tenor soloist David Myers-Wakeman and a jazz combo will join the chorus for this popular event. This musical event will be held at the Damariscotta Baptist Church, 4 Bristol Road.

The Maine Art Gallery, at 15 Warren St. in Wiscasset, kicks off its 2025 season with the annual show of diverse and creative art by local students.

Wiscasset Elementary art teacher Elizabeth Proffetty and Middle/High art teacher Shalimar Chassé have curated a lively exhibit of over 100 examples of work in a wide variety of mediums including drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, crafts, mixed media, and printmaking.

The Midcoast High Winds Flute Choir, under the direction of Boothbay resident Carolyn Lanigan, will give a free public concert at the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor, 125 Townsend Ave., Sunday, April 6 at 3 p.m.

Bestselling Maine novelist Tess Gerritsen (author of "The Spy Coast" and the Rizzoli & Isles series) and journalist and science writer Kathryn Miles (author of "Trailed" and "Quakeland") will share the stage on Saturday, May 3 at 7 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Brunswick for a fundraiser to support literacy education. The evening will feature Gerritsen and Miles reading from their work and in conversation about their inspirations and writing craft. A reception and book signing with the authors will follow.

Everyman Repertory Theatre presents its final staged reading in the Forgotten Classics series this year, "Detective Story" by Sidney Kingsley, Saturday, April 12 at 7 p.m. at Pascal Hall, 86 Pascal Ave., in Rockport.

"Detective Story" is set in the squad room of a New York police station.

"It is a fascinatingly realistic picture of a series of routine cases brought into a metropolitan police station in the course of a day,"said Everyman, in a news release.
